How to stop an invading army: issue a BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) or its modern counterpart, to every citizen over the age of eleven.

Snorkebob: You should check the RCMP data base.

As a nurse it was clear the Canadian lethal weapon of choice was knives.

The reasoning for the right to bear arms is found in the Federalist Papers. It is more than milita as the Court found. It is based on fear of tyranny, by outside and internal forces, and a right of citizens to overthrow bad government.

A right of citizens to defend their natural rights and freedoms against the power of those who would strip them.

In today's world that means you have a right to arm yourself with the same level of capability as government could bring against you.

It is up to the citizen to decide how to defend themselves. Nothing prevents one from familiarizing use of firearms, or even to practice with them daily if so desired.

I believe this decision allows any citizen to carry a gun in public long as they are mentally fit, and have no criminal record.

All you gun enthusiasts crack me up!! Let me give you a little stat from the show 60 minutes last year. In Canada where they don't allow citizens to carry guns, they had a total of 5 fatalities last year. That's 5 TOTAL gun related issues!!!! If out "founding fathers" knew about the world we now live in, they would've thought twice about "the right to bear arms".

I have actually read all 157 pages of the Opinion, and the Dissents. Based on Justice Stevens' careful historical analysis of the intent of Madison and the founders, the decision was clearly wrongly decided, since there was never any intent to create an individual right to own a firearm for self defense, only for militia purposes. That was clearly decided in 1934 in the Miller case. However, in this country, our corrupt political system often lets it's Court decide issues based on popular politics, and gun ownership is the ultimate sacred cow of American politics. Regardless, this decision will please many, and at the same time also kill many. I remind all gun enthusiasts that the simple truth is that the most likely person to be killed by a family gun is your own child. Police departments, even in conservative areas, all support at least some gun control.

I feel safer in my house with a gun by my side. What if they were three of them. I dont't think a baseball bat or a slingshot going work.

At the rate of crime rising all over this world, and with the corrupt government system that keeps allowing our economy to fail, it is only safe that each household protect themselves from the side effects of our negative economic environment.

You can't think for one second that the gun laws are for controling crime. I don't think that your average bank robber goes down and registers his weapon before he does the hold up. The laws on the books only apply to citizens in good standing purchasing from a liscensed registered dealer. I do believe that the founding fathers had a good idea about what they were doing. Our being armed, upstanding citizens prevents us from being subjegated by a dictatorial government. We have been able to perpetuate the freedoms bestowed on us by the constitution and the bill of rights simply because anyone attempting to relieve us of those rights knows they will be met with armed resistance. One firearm for every citizen over the age of five is a force to be reconed with (current gun stat). Long live freedom and stay out of my gun cabinet!

DC was very violent in the 60's and 70's prior to the gun regulations. Worst crime rate in the nation. It is about containing violence within the district, gangs and murders. Wait to see what happens now, there needs to be some sense in the country as to gun control. The forefathers never dreamed of the types of weapons these thugs carry and use daily, nor had a crystal ball to see the violence in our society.

We are missing the point as to why we have this right written in the Constitution. It's to protect us from our own government! At some point in time the democracy will vanish. And we will have a true dictator. Unlike the so called 43rd president. What a joke. If anyone has too much power in DC it's Naci & Harry. Look how everything has gone to H E L L in this country after they came into power in 2006.

I don't agree with the right to have guns for self-defense. There are so many other items in the house that can be used as a weapon to either injure or deter the assailant, other thatn pulling out a gun and shooting them, with the possibility death. There are way too many bad incidents involving guns, and some are with people who were trained properly.
