I am sure no one takes pleasure in ending a life of a human being. Though I'm certain these officers are trained to dismantle any situation no matter how large or small a life threatening situation might be. Regardless, the law will decided the outcome. My bewilderment lies with those people who are quick to judge who this victim is, what he was as a person, when he became such a person of such imfamous nature, why he became such a person of an imfamous nature, etc. was he a rapist? a child molester? Some deep monster that hid like some serial killer? I think not? Was he any different from some deranged drunk on our roads. ( Oh alchohol is legal by the way) but thats okay right? Does anyone have any compassion for his family? Or did you condemn them also? Everyone has such perfect lives living in their own little comfortable corner of righteous confusion. Get a grib you guys. I think you're the ones we have to be careful of.

DrLeisure, you might want to talk to the rangers in Topanga Canyon about Mr. Ogden.

Thank you MPD for taking another drug dealer off the streets of Maui. Handcuffs or a body bag, don't matter to me. Body bag is cheaper though in the long run. Justified,*****yah. Would do the same thing if I was an officer in that position. Just curious, but did the ohana of George know of his dealings?....use? If that was my kid and I knew, I would call the cops myself. It's sad that someones brother, son, uncle etc...died. I'm not sorry that a drug dealing ice head is gone.

the attempt was to stop a criminal with warrants, high on ice, who was fleeing a swat raid on a drug house, and try to keep him from killing an officer.

patonmaui...it became a weapon as soon as he moved towards officers, hit officers, and continued towards them. pretending that he was shot just cause he didnt stop is dumb and what so many other ignorant people are trying to suggest happened. give it up. shooting tires, and radiators does nothing unless it is in a movie, so where everyone gets their dumb ideas about it is obvious. go back to HBO or whatever it is you watch and leave the thinking to those with brains and common sense.

I have a question. If the objective is to stop a vehicle, then why is killing the driver the only option? I've read so many times where Police are in the process of stopping a vehicle and the only attempt at doing so is to kill the driver. What ever happened to shooting out all 4 tires and the radiator? In this case, they were merely lucky that the 17 year old girl was not killed in the gunfire. This particular situation aside, overall isn't it just a little scary to know that you could be shot at the wheel of your vehicle if a police officer feels that your car is a threat to him? There is much more to consider here than just the justification of the officers actions. Shoot first ask questions later?

Mauilady808, the Maui cops effected exactly what you asked for in the last line of your post; to keep us safe from the likes of Georgie! They snuffed him permanently and now that he's pushing up daisies and won't finally be getting another wrist slap for his transgressions by Judge "Let 'Em Go" August, he won't be able to victimize all of us again. Dope pushers make ALL of us victims of their clients' crimes against us and our property. 'Nuff said...

the guy in kihei was shot and killed cause he attacked a cop with bear repellant and continued to advance towards him after numerous warnings by the officer with his gun drawn. what do you think the guy wouldve done to the cop once he incapacitated him with bear repellant and got ahold of his weapon?? i am sure this is what the officer was thinking as he stood there being sprayed. any more dumb questions? when will the term, "stop or I'll shoot" mean anything to you?

?A few months ago I heard that a settlement had been reached in the Charles Benson Ogden shooting of February 29, 2004. Published accounts at the time suggested it was a justified shooting by an officer. On the street accounts suggested otherwise. It would be useful to know what was determined that resulted in the settlement with Maui County. Nothing has been made public of which I am aware.

I support MPD and feel the officers were justified in using deadly force. I DO NOT support George Brittain's lifestyle or the choices he made. However, I don't believe it would benefit anyone if the comments here continue to be degrading, harassing, or obscene. At least be civil and realize that although George Brittain was a criminal, he was still someone's son, brother or friend. Let them deal with their loss. The rest of us should continue to work together to keep ourselves and our families safe from people like George.

George's sister is a close friend of mine and she is incredibly hurt by what others have said about him. Yes, he did a horrible thing and was involved with illegal activities, BUT we need to be sensitive to his loved ones who are reading these degrading comments about their loved one. Putting all these negative things aside, George WAS a wonderful man. Tonight is his funeral and the family is grieving...please let him rest in peace.

Upcountry--Logic is that if someone is trying to do bodily harm to you, you will use whatever force is necessary to save your life. If one bullet stopped him then so be it. And if it took 20 more rounds, he asked for it. If any of the officers were from your family would you be voicing the same comments? I don't think so.

Dude, i'm not saying everything is the officers fault. I just thought the situation could of be handled different. If your resources are mainly from the news, your lost....Even officers that are friends of mine agree to a certain point. Plus there are people that were at the scene. So, that's all i have to say about that. there was a time at band camp, when i was playing the flute. I made beautiful music. Birds were singing, bees were buzzing. It was beautiful. A magical momment for me. I looked up at a tree and realized!!! I just tryin to waste your time...........lol........morons!!!;)

vegas, i'm sure if he wanted them dead, he would have ran them over again.....use logic my dear......by the way they fired one shot, then they unloaded 20+ rounds. portagee...i do serve a positive role in my community, thank god you don't....lol... The police didn't miss the passenger by strategy. They just got lucky. Some people are so nieve. Dietweakerdie you must feel big saying things like that online...whoa....big guy....what a joke. Just like some cops, gotta hide behind something....lol.....And really no one is lookinf for sympathy here. just expressions. Go back to school..

I agree with dietweakersdie.I don't have no pity on drug addicts like Georgie. It's a illness that's a choice. They chose to put the pipe to their mouth, they chose to rob and steal, they chose to lie, they chose to ruin their families lives and they chose to cripple the community with this"disease".It's common sense how to cure this"disease",if these tweakers choose realize the detrimental effects of this drug which they already know, but just don't give a crap and choose to blame everyone but themselves, when they are the ones who made the choice to put the pipe to their mouth. Its all about"their" choice that lead them to their fate.

The death of my friend George was senseless. None of the arguing and disagreements are going to bring him back to his family and friends. No one can really say what they would do in in a similar situation, When fear takes over we think only to survive, And what makes you think that just because one stands behind a police badge that he makes correct judgement cslls. And who knows how things really went down that horrible morning. Id like to hear the passengers story. She was shuffled out of Maui so fast, why. I dont think the police were thinking of her saftey that morning. If she had been murdered like George how would they have justified that. Ooops?

They were ABSOLUTELY justified! As for the person below, F Da Police, I find it interesting that a person with that login DOESN'T like the police on Maui and can do nothing but complain about them. I challenge you to to improve our police training on Maui. You talk like you should know something about how they're trained, so quit complaining and do something about it! They were justified in the shooting in Paia a couple years ago just like they were justified in this recent shooting. Try serving a postive roll in our community instead of complaining about it.

Yes they were!!!! This individual had no regard for the lives of the officers when he attempted to run them down. He already had a criminal history and how were the officers to know whether he had a gun and would start firing at them. The officers put their lives on the line everyday to serve and protect the public. When a criminal takes aim at them it is usually to kill and not to just cause injury to stop them from making an arrest. Mr Brittain didn't think about the juvenile in the vehicle with him and how his actions may cause harm to that person. He controlled his actions that day that brought his life to an end. Granted the Maui police officers may have these types of situations rarely compared to their big city counterparts, but with the gangs, the drug dealers and so forth moving into the Islands, I am sure they will be having to deal more and more with this kind of situations.
