Man arrested on sex assault charges
WAILUKU - A 57-year-old Haiku man was arrested Monday afternoon on a warrant charging him with multiple counts of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl.
Bail was set at $621,000 for Robert Carnahan. He faces 10 counts of first-degree sexual assault, four counts of third-degree sexual assault and one count of fourth-degree sexual assault of the girl, who is related to him.
The charges stem from a June 2011 investigation, said Lt. Jayson Rego of the Criminal Investigation Division. He said Carnahan was arrested on the warrant at his residence.

Man tossed by wave receives treatment
A 40-year-old California man was airlifted from Hana after suffering spinal injuries when he was thrown by waves onto the shore at Hamoa Beach on Monday, according to Ryan Joslin, spokesman for the Maui County Paramedics Association.
The Davis resident had been standing in the shore break when he was thrown onto the beach, Joslin said.
Medic 6 from Hana and the Maui Fire Department's Hana engine company responded to the 2:51 p.m. call. The patient was transported by medical emergency helicopter in 15 minutes to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where a trauma team was awaiting his arrival in the emergency department, Joslin said.

Flags at half-staff in honor of Medeiros
HONOLULU - Flags are flying at half-staff today in memory of former state Rep. John Justin Medeiros, who died July 13.
Medeiros served the Kailua district in the state House from 1971 to 1988. He served as a delegate to the state Constitutional Convention in 1968 and was chairman of the Oahu Advisory Council from 1969 to 1970. He also served as a member of the Hawaii State Boxing Commission.
"John devoted himself to serving his community, and he set an example of courage and perseverance," said Gov. Neil Abercrombie, who issued the flag order. "We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to his family."

Man shot by police had meth in system
WAILUKU - A 31-year-old Kahakuloa man who was fatally shot by a police officer in May had high levels of methamphetamine and amphetamine in his body at the time of his death, police said Monday.
Police released the results from the toxicology examination for Marshall M.K. Langford.
He was pronounced dead at about 11:20 a.m. May 22 in the parking lot of the Mana Kai Maui Resort in Kihei.
Police said Langford had pulled out what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it at a police officer while trying to drive away in a stolen rental car. Police had gone to the resort to investigate a report that the stolen car was there.
Witnesses reported hearing three gunshots.
In the car, police reported finding an air soft pellet gun that replicated a semiautomatic pistol, a sawed-off shotgun and a clear glass smoking pipe like ones commonly used to smoke crystal methamphetamine.
Police did not release information on where and how many times Langford was shot.

Input sought on application fee schedule
The county's Department of Planning is seeking public input on a new permit application fee schedule that has been proposed to help the department recover more of its costs.
The department will hold a public meeting at 5 p.m. Aug. 29 in its conference room in the Kalana Pakui Building in Wailuku.
The new proposed approach to determining various permit application fees is based on an assessment of actual costs tied to processing permits and other services, according to a county press release.
At current rates, the Planning Department only recovers about 19 percent of its operating costs. The new fees would be phased in over five years and allow the department to recoup about 70 percent of its costs.
Input from the public meeting will be passed on to the County Council, which is reviewing the issue.

Fires burn nearly acre of brush
Two brush fires about a half-mile apart burned about three-fourths of an acre Monday afternoon along Haleakala Highway near the Keahua junction, a fire official said.
The fires were reported at 2:55 p.m., with engine companies from Paia and Kahului responding along with a Kahului tanker crew.
A mauka fire at the intersection burned about one-fourth acre of bushes on the shoulder of the highway, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
He said a makai fire burned about a half-acre of brush on the shoulder before both fires were brought under control at 3:30 p.m.
Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. crews mopped up remaining hot spots.
A fire inspector and police arson investigator were dispatched to the scene.
The cause could not be determined, and no damage was reported.

Puukolii brush blaze contained
A 30-acre brush fire in Puukolii that came within 50 feet of townhouses was 100 percent contained shortly after noon Monday, as fire crews continued to monitor hot spots.
Nearby residents said the fire had been small before gusts blew it out of control Sunday afternoon in the area near Kaanapali Hillside and the Masters at Kaanapali subdivisions.
The fire burned up to Puukolii Road, with 42 firefighters working to contain it Sunday.
The fire was 50 percent contained Sunday night before being called 100 percent contained at 12:15 p.m. Monday, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
He said the cause has not been determined.
