Problems need answers
And so it begins. The candidates have filed their papers. making them official entrants in this year’s races for the Maui County Council and the state Legislature. Not surprisingly, three incumbents don’t have to run at all. Council Members Danny Mateo and Mike Victorino and state House Rep. Mele Carroll have no opposition. For them the election is a formality — unless they decide to go to work for some candidate running for another Maui office. The others face some sort of opposition. Primary elections will determine the Democrat and Republican candidates in the November election for state Senate and House. County elections are nonpartisan so there are no primary elections, per se. The so-called First Special Election will winnow the field for the County Council down to two for each residency seat in the General Election. At this point, there is only one election that will clearly hinge on a specific issue. Incumbent Sen. Roz Baker has a primary election challenger, Bart Mulvihill.
