Horizon to hike fuel surcharge
HONOLULU (AP) — Horizon Lines Inc., the state’s second largest ocean carrier, said it will hike its fuel surcharge for shipments to and from the Mainland by 4.5 percentage points to a record 42.75 percent. The increase, effective Aug. 17, comes just one month after the company’s last surcharge hike that took effect July 14. Horizon has added 14.25 percentage points to the surcharge since January. Until Friday, however, the increases had been spaced about three months apart. In a letter to customers, Horizon said an ongoing escalation of fuel costs prompted the latest move. ‘‘Horizon Lines understands that this adjustment impacts your cost of doing business, just as these fuel cost increases have affected our cost of providing service,’’ the company said in the letter.
