‘Once On This Island’ ode to power of love

* “Once On This Island” runs at 7:30 p.m. every Friday and Saturday and 5 p.m. Sundays through Aug. 3. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for students and seniors 65 and older, $15 bargain matinee price on Sundays; available in advance at the Maui OnStage ticket outlet, If the Shoe Fits, a few doors down from the Historic Iao Theater at 12 N. The beautiful sound of singing greeted me as I stopped by the Historic Iao Theater on Saturday evening to pick up my tickets for “Once On This Island.” “That’s the cast warming up for tonight,” Maui OnStage Artistic Associate Kristi Scott told me. It proved to be a lovely glimpse of what was to come later as we settled into our seats for the one-act musical. The gorgeous set by scenic designer Krista Fernandez gave the proscenium new heights, drawing the eye up to the top of a painted silvery waterfall spilling into a dark pool. Mossy r
