SPILL THE BEANS . . . All right, I’ll admit I’m a Zippy’s virgin. I’m embarrassed about being so naive on what is pegged as “Hawaii’s favorite restaurant.” After all, it’s been around for 42 years, even before the first McDonald’s opened in Hawaii, and now there are 27 outlets. Maui’s version is set to open in Kahului Aug. 18. Like others, I have tried the chili and rice that Zippy’s makes in large vats (110 tons a month) and sells to fundraising groups, but THAT doesn’t count. I’ve even bought the frozen vegetarian chili at Longs. So when it gets right down to it, I’m still a 51-year-old Zippy’s virgin. So I told co-worker Tobi Uehara about my innocence in this matter and she clued me in to Zippy’s allure. “They’re famous for their chili, but I love the mahi burgers,” says Tobi, an enthusiastic fan. “My kids love the fried chicken.
