Coolen ‘awestruck’ by NCAA selection

HONOLULU — The University of Hawaii softball team has earned an at-large berth in the NCAA tournament.
The Rainbow Wahine (38-18) will face Mississippi State (40-20) on Friday in Tempe, Ariz. The double-elimination Tempe Regional also includes Stony Brook (33-21-1) and Arizona State (56-5).
Kate Robinson is the Rainbow Wahine’s top pitcher, going 17-8 with a 1.84 ERA and 136 strikeouts in 170 innings, and also leads the team in batting average (.384), home runs (19) and RBIs (51).
Hawaii finished third in both the Western Athletic Conference regular season and tournament. The WAC has three other teams in the NCAA tournament — conference tournament champion Louisiana Tech and regular-season champion Nevada, as well as Fresno State.
‘‘I am totally awestruck,’’ said UH coach Bob Coolen. ‘‘The team started cheering before I saw it on the television screen. It shows that the WAC has gotten stronger and is playing tougher competition as a whole
