VIEWPOINT: Program exposes students to fresh fruits and vegetables
While, understandably, the focus on education has gone to teacher furloughs lately, it is important to also concentrate on the quality of education and the nutrition needed to support learning. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently made the prediction that one in three children born in the United States in 2000 will likely develop Type 2 diabetes, and half of all minority children (including Native Hawaiians) will contract this debilitating disease. Because of this, the federal Department of Education has created numerous programs to fund serving more fresh fruit and vegetables to schoolchildren. This creates several bright spots in Maui’s public schools, including the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. The purpose of the FFVP is to introduce children to more exotic produce, and it is available to a limited number of elementary schools with enrollments of more 50 percent of their students in the free and reduced-fee lunch programs.
