Olelo o Hawaii — Public Law 103-150, the apology. It’s amazing how they used their language to override olelo o Hawaii. There was a time when we weren’t allowed to speak olelo o Hawaii, only English. After the overthrow, U.S. President Grover Cleveland concluded that a “substantial wrong has thus been done which a due regard for our national character as well as the rights of the injured people requires we should endeavor to repair” and called for the restoration of the Hawaiian monarchy. Jan. 31, 2008, the Hawaii Supreme Court ruled ceded lands — crown, government and public — cannot be sold, exchanged or transferred until Native Hawaii claims are resolved through a “political process.” We so-called indigenous Hawaiian people never directly relinquished our claims to our inherent sovereignty either through the monarchy or through a plebiscite or referendum.
