| | Bigot watchFebruary 11, 2012 - Harry EagarI am disgusted with the cowardice of my sometime colleagues in the reporting business for refusing to put the meaningful question to the bishops, Republican candidates and conservatives who are claiming Obama's would-be regulation on contraceptive medicine is an assault on religious liberty. If no one else will state the obvious, RtO will: Not one of those people believes in religious liberty. The RC church (though not all Catholics) has been opposed to freedom of conscience throughout its life. Every last conservative at the CPAC convention wants government to coerce you to offer public prayers to their gods. Doubt me? Ask 'em. On the instant issue with the bishops, my concept of freedom does not provide that your boss gets to regulate your sex behavior. Obama's climbdown was also cowardly, and, if he had counted noses, politically foolish. As the only honest man ever to make bishop said: "It is w0rse than a crime. It is a mistake."
Article Comments(4)skipelkinsFeb-16-12 1:52 PM Come now, Harry ... you, as well as anyone, should know that once there is "regulation", there is no longer "liberty". Doesn't matter the topic. HeySkipperFeb-13-12 8:24 PM Oh, and one other thing. I can't count the number of times I have read journalists using the word "free" with respect to contraception. Why is it that progressives are constitutionally incapable of taking on board that there is no such thing? HeySkipperFeb-13-12 8:18 PM ** put the meaningful question to the bishops, ... If no one else will state the obvious, RtO will: Not one of those people believes in religious liberty. ** Non sequitor much? Whether bishops, Republicans, et al believe in religious liberty has not heck all to do with whether forcing Catholic organizations to pay for contraception costs is an assault thereon. ** On the instant issue with the bishops, my concept of freedom does not provide that your boss gets to regulate your sex behavior. ** Strawman much? That isn't the issue at hand. Seeing this as regulating sexual behavior requires a huge reality distortion field. The primary issue is whether religious organizations can be forced to explicitly fund things that go against their core beliefs. To the left, the only beliefs worthy of respect are their own.
